There is something I hear time and time again when speaking to brides who are planning their own wedding: “I know what I want, but I’m just not sure where to start!”
And honestly, I get it.
You start with a venue, a date and a few lovely ideas. Before long, you are juggling suppliers, budgets, guest lists, seating plans, timings and approximately 47 decisions you hadn’t even realised you needed to make. Add a full-time job, family commitments and well-meaning advice from every direction, and suddenly planning your wedding feels rather more like a second career than an exciting chapter in your life.
After more than 30 years in hospitality and events, I have seen just how much goes into making a wedding day feel effortless. What guests see is the beautiful setting, the happy couple and a wonderful celebration. What they don’t see is the planning, the coordination and all those little details that need to come together behind the scenes.
So, if you are feeling overwhelmed, take a breath. You haven’t got it wrong, and you certainly don’t need to have everything figured out today. Let’s look at how to get things back into perspective.
Start With What Matters Most to You
Before you book another supplier, save another inspirational photograph or add yet another item to your wedding to-do list, take a moment to think about what you want from your day.
Do you dream of a relaxed countryside wedding with everyone gathered around long tables? Perhaps it’s a glamorous celebration with a fabulous party atmosphere, or a smaller, more intimate occasion with your closest family and friends.
There is no right or wrong answer. Every couple is different, and every wedding should be too.
Sit down together and agree on your three priorities. Is it the food, the venue, the entertainment, the photographs, or simply having everyone you love in one place? Once you know what matters most, you will have a much clearer idea of where to focus your budget, time and energy.
And here is a little reminder: you don’t have to recreate every beautiful wedding you have seen online. Take inspiration from others, absolutely, but don’t lose sight of your own vision along the way.
This is your day. It should reflect your personalities, your relationship and the things that matter to you as a couple. The most memorable weddings aren’t necessarily the biggest or the most extravagant; they are the ones that feel right for the people at the heart of them.
Get the Big Decisions Right First
One of the easiest ways to make wedding planning feel harder than it needs to be is to tackle things in the wrong order.
Your guest numbers, budget, preferred date and venue all influence one another. Before you fall in love with a venue, for example, make sure it can accommodate your guest list and works within your budget. There is little point spending hours choosing table decorations for a venue you haven’t secured!
Start by establishing a realistic budget and agreeing on your approximate guest numbers. Then research venues that suit your vision, capacity and finances. Once your date and venue are confirmed, you will have a much firmer foundation for booking suppliers and planning the finer details.
One thing I’ve learnt over the years is that wedding planning is a little like a jigsaw. Every piece needs to fit, and sometimes changing one small detail means looking again at something else.
That’s why I always encourage couples to think about the bigger picture before getting lost in the finer details. It isn’t just about booking wonderful suppliers; it’s about making sure everything works together.
A beautiful wedding isn’t simply a collection of lovely things. It’s how those things come together to create a day that feels right, flows naturally and allows you to enjoy the moments that matter most.
You Don’t Have to Do Everything Today
Wedding planning can quickly become a second job, particularly when you’re already juggling work, family life and everything else that fills your diary. The trick is to break the process down into manageable stages. Identify what needs to happen now, what can wait a few months and what doesn’t need your attention until much closer to the wedding.
Create one master checklist and keep your important information in one place. Set aside a regular time to work on your wedding plans rather than feeling that you should be doing something every spare minute of the day.
And please, remember to enjoy being engaged!
It’s easy to become so focused on organising the wedding that you forget to enjoy the journey towards it. Make time for date nights, celebrate the decisions you have made and give yourselves permission to put the planning aside occasionally.
Your wedding is one day, but the memories you are making together along the way matter too. You shouldn’t have to sacrifice every evening and weekend to a spreadsheet to create a wonderful celebration.
Be Careful Whose Advice You Follow
One of the biggest challenges for many couples isn’t a lack of ideas. It’s having too many of them. Family members may have strong opinions about the guest list. Friends will happily share what worked brilliantly at their weddings, while social media can leave you wondering whether you have somehow missed an essential detail that everyone else seems to know about.
Advice can be incredibly helpful, but it can also make you question decisions you are perfectly happy with. Listen, take inspiration and consider different perspectives, but remember that this is your wedding. You can appreciate someone’s opinion without feeling obliged to follow it.
When making decisions, come back to your priorities, your budget and what feels right for you as a couple. If a suggestion doesn’t fit, it’s perfectly acceptable to leave it on the table.
You don’t need to please everyone. You need to create a day that feels right for you.
After all, the aim isn’t to put on a wedding that looks like everyone else’s. It’s to create something unique and memorable that you and your guests will look back on with happy memories for years to come.
Know When to Ask for Help
There comes a point when the wedding spreadsheet starts to feel like it’s running your life, supplier emails are piling up and you are no longer quite sure what you’ve booked, what you’ve paid for or what still needs doing.
This doesn’t mean you’re disorganised or incapable of planning your own wedding. It simply means you’re managing a lot of unfamiliar decisions, often alongside a very busy life.
And here’s something I’d really like you to remember: asking for advice isn’t admitting defeat.
You don’t need to hand over your wedding to a planner to benefit from their experience. Sometimes you simply need someone who knows the industry to sense-check your plans, help you see the wood for the trees and point out the things you might not have considered.
That’s not losing control. It’s making an informed decision to give yourself a little more confidence.
Recently, we worked with two brides who were both incredibly organised. They had put a great deal of thought into their wedding and had done much of the hard work themselves. But as the big day approached, that little feeling of overwhelm began to creep in.
Had they remembered everything? How would it all work on the day? Were the suppliers arriving at the right times? Did the timings allow everything to flow smoothly? And, of course, how would all the family dynamics fit into the mix?
These are perfectly normal questions, even when you have been wonderfully organised from the outset.
In a short space of time, we worked through their plans, confirmed the flow of the day’s timings, rescheduled supplier arrivals where needed and reviewed the practical details to make sure everything worked together.
The result? They were able to feel more at ease with the decisions they had made and more confident about how their wedding day would unfold. They didn’t need someone to take over. They simply needed an experienced pair of eyes to review the plans, spot the things that needed attention and bring everything back into perspective.
And that’s the beauty of having a little expert support. Sometimes, a few well-placed adjustments and the reassurance that you’ve thought things through properly can make all the difference between worrying about the details and looking forward to the day itself.
A Little Expert Guidance Can Go a Long Way
This is exactly why I introduced the Power WOWer.

Sometimes, you just need an hour with someone who understands events, has seen what can go wrong and knows how to help you think things through.
That’s what the Power WOWer is all about. I will talk through where you are, what you are trying to achieve and what’s causing you the most concern. I’ll share my experience, offer practical advice and help you work out what needs your attention next.
No judgement, no silly questions and no pressure to do things my way. It’s your wedding, after all.
My job is to help you feel clearer about your decisions and more confident about moving forward. You bring the plans, the questions and even the things you’re not quite sure how to explain. I’ll bring the experience and a little LLE magic.

Your Wedding, Your Way
Wedding planning will always involve decisions, compromises and the occasional unexpected curveball. That’s part of organising any event, and even the most carefully considered plans need a little flexibility.
But feeling overwhelmed doesn’t have to become part of the experience.
Start with what matters, tackle the important decisions first, take things one step at a time and remember that you don’t need to know everything. And if you reach a point where you need a little direction, there’s no shame in asking someone who has been there before.
Most importantly, don’t lose sight of what you are celebrating. This is your wedding, your relationship and your story. Whether you’re planning an intimate gathering or a grand celebration, there is no template you need to follow and no competition to win.
At Love Luxury Events, we believe every event should be unique and memorable. Our role is to help you bring your vision to life, take care of the details that matter and give you the confidence to enjoy the experience along the way.
Your wedding day should be about being present with the person you’re marrying and the people you love, not worrying about what happens next.
So, if you’re currently staring at your wedding plans wondering, “Where on earth do I start?”, take a breath. You don’t need all the answers today.
Sometimes, all it takes is the right conversation to turn “I’m completely overwhelmed” into “Right, I’ve got this!”
And that feels like a rather lovely place to start.
